Contributions to the discussion about the heuristic potential of the concept of “social issue”
Abstract
The object of this work is to contribute to the debate regarding the potential loss of heuristic capacity of the concept “social issue/new social issue”, and its impact on the design of social policies. After browsing quickly over the traditional definitions of the “social issue” concept and taking into account the limitations that different approaches have set on it, we argue that the “social issue” does retain its capacity to help us understand and explain situations of inequality and vulnerability in the context of our present neoliberal globalized capitalist society.
