Dictatorship, torture and gender violence in Brazil: intersectional reflections based on Cecília Coimbra’s narrative
Keywords:
Military Dictatorship, Brazil. Cecília Coimbra, Violence, GenderAbstract
This study analyses markers of gender violence against women in Brazil’s military dictatorship years. Through a critical discourse analysis of Cecília Coimbra’s narrative, founder of “Grupo Tortura Nunca Mais/RJ” and a regime Survivor, the paper will problematize the intersectional and colonial frames presented by this universe of violence. The results indicate that the violence perpetrated against women by the repressive mechanisms of the Brazilian dictatorial state, were not only politically founded in the fight against anti-regime demonstrations, but also presented gender violence based on the sexist constructions of the patriarchal system. Although this understanding derives primarily from the experience of a single case among many, Cecília Coimbra’s testimony is endowed with a potential capable of opening the way for identification of other forms of institutionalized violence for subjects and subjectivities, during the Brazilian State of Exception.
