Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine transformations in democracy, focusing on non-institutionalized forms of participation. For this purpose, the Chilean student movement of 2011 will be presented as a study case. The guideline questions in this paper are: Which were the novelties that student demonstrations presented? and which collective action repertoires characterized them? The analysis of these events and their political consequences will show that the Chilean democracy is changing, and that one of the novel features of this transformation is the collective-action repertoires carried out in the streets. Their great novelty is the establishment of new democratizing topics aimed at consolidating political debates about education, justice and equality issues.
