Abstract

The aim of this article is to approach the notion of recognition and the role it plays as an element that constructs and destroys identity. For this approach, the approaches of the philosopher Judith Butler are taken as a frame of reference, as well as the theoretical approaches of those academics who have influenced her work. From this analysis, we seek to explain how recognition can act as a factor in the normalization of identity, limiting the individual's capacity for performativity and, therefore, his or her possibility of being diverse. In conclusion, the need to break with the formative notion of recognition is proposed, considering that recognition not only grants characteristics, but can also destroy them, as happens with situations of false recognition such as discrimination.
