This paper aims to provide an insight into the problem of the political identity’s conceptualization in the context of contemporary liberal thought. At the first place, the adversarial relationship that keep together the concepts of historical legitimacy and law legitimacy within the nation-state structure is exposed. Secondly, it presents the proposal developed by Will Kymlicka to defend, within the liberal tradition, a theory of minority rights and of group-differentiated rights. Third, it explores the concept of political identity that is presupposed in Kymlicka's theoretical position. Finally, it presents a critical analysis of this proposal; wich is focused on the role assigned to the mechanisms of political representation to solve the problems posed by the multicultural challenge.
